What is an MSO, and why urgent care clinics use one
A management services organization (MSO) provides the business services a medical practice needs, such as billing, staffing, technology and facilities, under a written agreement. In Texas, where medical practice is reserved to physicians, the MSO model lets physicians own and lead the practice while a management company handles operations. For urgent care clinics, that means providers spend more time with patients and less time on payer portals and payroll.

Why urgent care networks are in demand
In September 2026, Prisma Health announced it would acquire 36 urgent care centers in South Carolina from Novant Health, with about 500 employees moving with the centers. Deals like this show how much health systems value organized networks of clinics under one management team. Independent clinics can get many of the same advantages, such as shared billing, staffing and marketing, by joining a managed network.

How a physician-owned practice and an MSO split the work
In the physician-owned model, the practice owns everything clinical: patient care, protocols, provider hiring, medical records and payer contracts. The MSO owns and runs everything else: the site, equipment, staff administration, billing and technology. A written Management Services Agreement lists every responsibility so there is no confusion about who decides what.

Occupational medicine: steady weekday volume for urgent care
Walk-in volume rises and falls with the seasons. Employer services such as work-injury care, DOT physicals and drug testing bring scheduled, weekday visits that smooth out the slow months. Building those programs takes employer outreach, certified examiners and clean billing, which a management partner can provide.

What to expect when you sell an urgent care clinic
A typical sale moves from a confidential first call to a review of financials, payer contracts and the lease, then a letter of intent, closing and a transition period. Sellers should expect questions about collections, payer mix, liabilities and staffing, and should have their own attorney review the agreements.

Five signs your clinic needs a management partner
1. Claims denials are rising and A/R is getting older. 2. Staffing gaps force you to close early or turn patients away. 3. You spend evenings on payroll, vendors and payer calls. 4. Online reviews and search visibility have stalled. 5. You want to add services such as occupational medicine or chronic care but lack the time or capital to launch them.
